My Second Source

Louis, Martine A., et al. "Abdominal Pain In The Female Patient: A Case Of Concurrent Acute Appendicitis And Ruptured Endometrioma." Case Reports In Surgery (2016): 1-4. Academic Search Complete. Web. 21 Jan. 2017.

This study on a 24 year old chinese woman goes into depth about her post pregnancy condition which included a diagnosis of an ovarian cyst and acute appendicitis. The document specifically states, “general surgeons are often asked to evaluate acute abdominal pain; however the differential diagnosis must be expanded in women of childbearing age,”(Louis 1), which underlines the importance of taking pregnancy into account when diagnosing female patients. The study goes on to describe the patient's condition with no reference to past medical history and states her as having “periumbilical abdominal pain”(Louis, 1). A CT scan (computed tomography) indicated that her appendix was slightly dilated. Also found was an ovarian cyst. A “laparoscopic appendectomy and left ovarian cystectomy,”(Louis 1), were performed and the patient was cured.

Honestly, any of the document could be quoted or paraphrased, but I included some in my above summary that I will more than likely use. Here are the quotes I used above: “general surgeons are often asked to evaluate acute abdominal pain; however the differential diagnosis must be expanded in women of childbearing age,” “laparoscopic appendectomy and left ovarian cystectomy.”

This is a reliable source because it is a case study performed by the surgeons in Flushing Hospital. It was found using Galileo and is peer reviewed. It is not a URL because it is a PDF document. This source is current and usable in my project.

This case study fits directly into my research project because it is a case study focusing on a complaint of the abdomen. My project will go through the process that doctors take when diagnosing a patient and this case study does just that. It is important for me to look at as many case studies as possible to become as familiar with the process as possible. Being in the internship I am in allows me to see similar cases face to face and to draw connections between different cases. I can use this source to walk through the diagnosis process in my research paper.
